The CO2-BioProducts project aims to produce and recover high value bioactive and biochemical products, derived from microalgae biomass. This type of biomass is a major renewable source that can be used for the production of multiple bioproducts, within the concept of a 3rd generation biorefinery. If implemented simultaneously with the capture and conversion of significant amounts of CO2 from gas pollutants, this practice can have a large positive environmental impact.
The proposed technology is developed in order to recover from the microalgal biomass bioactive compounds (e.g., phycocyanin, carotene, vitamins), with applications in cosmetics and as high nutritional value ingredients, as well as to fully exploit the residual biomass (rich in proteins, carbohydrates and fatty acids) as livestock feed additive.
Methodology
The CO2-BioProducts project focuses on the exploitation of biomass derived from selected microalgae species via the development of an integrated multi-product generation process, including targeted bioactive compounds (as primary products) and the residual biomass (as a complementary product), with tailored composition. The development and implementation of a dual target strategy (profitable production and minimum environmental footprint) is the fundamental principle that is applied to all bioprocesses in order to ensuring the sustainable operation of the complete value chain.
The individual objectives of the project can be summarized as follows:
